General English....................... 20 / 25 lessons

IELTS Preparation.................. 20 / 25 lessons

Intensive Conversation......... 20 / 25 lessons

Supplemental Learning......... 5 lessons per week (to be a total of 30 lessons)

General English is for students who want to:

  • develop all the English language skills

  • learn in a class level that is appropriate for students

  • develop their English skills for travel, work and communication

  • prepare to go to school in Canada

  • go to college with Pathway Program

Intensive Conversation is for students who want to:

  • practice and improve their English communication skills

  • increase their confidence and comfort level when using English

  • increase their knowledge of Canadian culture, customs,
    idiomatic expressions, etc

*Minimum of 4 enrollments to open Intensive Conversation.

IELTS Preparation is for students who want to:

  • prepare for the IELTS examination

  • gain skills and strategies effectively for the IELTS examination

  • practice IELTS examination and get feedback from an experienced teacher

*Minimum of 4 enrollments to open IELTS Preparation.

Supplemental Learning is for students who want to:

  • maximize the use of the language with special focus lessons.

  • focus on specific English skills that they want to improve.

*Minimum of 4 enrollments to open Supplemental Learning.

 

General English (GE20/GE25)

English Level: 5 levels

Length of each level: 10 weeks (5 weeks x 2 modules)

Lessons per week: 20 Lessons (GE20) or 25 Lessons (GE25)

  • All-around ability in English at any entry levels

  • Weekly oral presentation to improve speaking skills and gain confidence.

  • Review tests to assess student’s progress and identify student’s strength and weakness.

  • Speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, naturally including grammar and vocabulary.

  • Main Textbook is an integrated skills series that gets students talking - in class, and everywhere.

Learning Focus

GE1 – GE2
• Focusing on the foundation of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation for confident speaking.
• Introduction of reading, writing and listening skills.
• Practical English to understand high-frequency phrases and to know what to say in typical situations.

 

GE3
• Fresh challenges to help them realize how much they know and make their passive knowledge active.
• Reviewing fundamental vocabulary and grammar and putting new vocabulary and grammar into practice.
• Practical English to get used to listening to faster, more colloquial speech.
• Improving reading skills with a wide variety of authentic text types and writing skills with guided writing tasks.

 

GE4 – GE5
• Using more sophisticated grammar structures with fluency and developing awareness of different grammatical
structures in order to use them appropriately.
• Focusing on advanced vocabulary to enable them to use the appropriate word or phrase according to the context or
situation.
• Reading skills with a wide variety of totally authentic texts in more professional and academic contents.
• Regular practice in planning, organizing, writing and checking to write quickly and accurately for more professional
and academic purposes.

 

Intensive Conversation (IC20 / IC25)

 

The Intensive Conversation is focused on speaking and listening, and students also spend time on grammar, reading and writing. The program is designed to prepare students to communicate effectively in diverse settings. Students develop and polish their English communication skills for academic, employment, and personal goals.

* Entry requirements: Level 3 or higher

* Program duration: 5 weeks / 10 weeks

* Lessons per week: 20 Lessons / 25 Lessons

IELTS Preparation (IP20 / IP25)

The IELTS Preparation is designed to develop the specific language skills of students preparing to take the IELTS Examination. This course targets the Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking competencies that are required for optimum performance in the IELTS examination.

* Entry requirements: Level 3 or higher

* Program duration:    5 weeks / 10 weeks

* Lessons per week:    20 Lessons / 25 Lessons

IELTS Preparation focuses on:

• English language skills in the IELTS examination areas: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking

• Equipping students with effective skills and strategies needed for the IELTS examination

• Practicing in test-taking strategies with realistic time limits

• Gaining confidence in speaking with mock examination

 

Supplemental Learning (5 lessons per week)

 

Supplemental Learning is for students who want to maximize the use of the language with special focus lessons.

The school selects some skills from the list below based on each student’s needs and interests.

Levels are divided by 3 levels.

Level 1: GE 1 and GE 2

Level 2: GE 3 and GE 4

Level 3: GE 4 and GE 5

Topic Samples

Survival English

Develop practical English skills in everyday situations. Topics include greetings, meeting people, small talk in English, making suggestions, giving opinions, and spare time vocabulary.

English for Work

Learn to communicate clearly in business situations such as interviews, presentations and meetings. Learn work-related vocabulary and idioms and improve your business writing.

Pronunciation and Accent Reduction

Learn tips on reducing on your accent and how to say difficult sounds in English. Review problem sounds, stress, patterns, intonation, and other features.

Creative Writing

Learn how to use different techniques to write creatively. Develop creative ideas and express your opinions through writing in a variety of forms.

Canadian Idioms and Slang

Learn a variety of English expressions that are used in daily conversation with a special emphasis on commonly used Canadian idioms and slang.

Reading

Develop reading fluency, accuracy, and comprehension by reading passages from a variety of sources such as newspapers, magazines, books, and websites.

 

Pathway Program

ALH Pathway Program is for students to improve their English skills in both general and academic, and prepare for a post-secondary program. Students who have completed ALH General English Level 5 will meet the English Language Proficiency Requirements for the purposes of admission to certain programs offered by the following colleges.

Assessment Tests and Levels

Placement Test (First day)

The placement test contains Listening, Speaking, Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading and Writing components.

The placement test will determine the student’s level.

 

Presentation (Every Friday) 

Students have oral presentations every Friday except Module test weeks. Oral presentations will give students opportunities to improve their English speaking skills and gain confidence to speak in front of people in English.​

Writing Assignment (Every Week)

Students work on a writing assignment each week. Writing assignments will give students opportunities to practice and improve their writing skills.

Review Test - GE20, GE25

Review tests cover grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation for each unit. Regular review tests enables students to monitor their progress.

Module Test / Level Exit Test - GE20, GE25 (5th Week of Module)

Module tests and Level exit tests cover grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, writing, reading, listening, and speaking. 

Review Test - IP20, IP25, IC20, IC25

The school schedules a review test every 5 weeks.

Academic Dishonesty

If the student tries to cheat and is found to be cheating or plagiarizing will be given a “0” mark.

Evaluation Sheet

An evaluation sheet is issued at the end of each module which states the scores of review test, module test, presentation, writing assignments, attendance, and participation, and teacher’s comment about the student’s performances.

Transcript

A transcript is issued at the end of each level upon request. A transcript states the scores of review tests, module tests, a level exit test, presentations, writing assignments, attendance, and participation.
